Sheffield Wednesday have appointed a new goalkeeping coach in Sal Bibbo.
The BBC Sheffield correspondent Rob Staton announced on his X account (formerly known as Twitter) that Bibbo was named the new goalkeeping coach on Wednesday.
It would be another addition to manager Danny Rohl’s backroom group, which already included Sascha Lense and Chris Powell.
Who is Sal Bibbo?
Bibbo is a former professional custodian who played for Reading, Havant & Waterlooville, Bath City and other lower league teams for the majority of his career.
After that, he began working with Reading as a part-time goalkeeping coach until 2006, when he was hired full-time.
Prior to joining Arsenal in 2019, he served as a coach at the Nike Academy.
In addition to helping the first team by instructing players like Petr Cech, Bernd Leno, and Emiliano Martinez, he served as the goalkeeping coach for their under-23 squad there.
In 2021, he moved to Brighton and began working as a youth coach there.
Brighton custodian Killian Cahill was reported to have stated that Bibbo had a significant positive impact on his personal growth.
“From the minute I arrived, Sal Bibbo has been amazing. When I originally joined, I was with the under-18s, but most weeks I’d be practising with Sal’s under-21s,” he stated on the club website in 2022.
“Since I established that foundation in the off-season, I feel like I’ve really advanced since I’ve been with him full-time this season. He has helped me in many ways and given me confidence, which should one day help me become a Premier League custodian.
Would he be a good appointment?
Bibbo is undoubtedly a respected and accomplished goalkeeping coach.
With any luck, he can use some of that expertise on Wednesday to support Cameron Dawson and Devis Vasquez, the two goalkeepers.
With 27, Wednesday has scored the fourth-most goals in the Championship this year.
Bibbo should help the Owls shore up in the back, which is something they need to do.
