Duke basketball ex-signee struggling mightily to begin college career

For Mackenzie Mgbako, a former Duke basketball commit, the season hasn’t started off well.

Until he asked to be released from his National Letter of Intent, Mackenzie Mgbako was the most anticipated player set to join the Duke basketball programme this winter.

The 247Sports Composite rankings had him ranked as the eighth-best player in the Class of 2024, but since he decommitted and chose Indiana over Kansas, St. John’s, and Louisville, things have not gone well for him.

Mgbako was arrested in Bloomington before the season on two Class A misdemeanour offences at a nearby Taco Bell, but the team did not publicly penalise him.

After averaging 5.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game in the Hoosiers’ first five games of the season, the McDonald’s All-American has found it difficult to adjust to the college game.

Mgbako played just nine minutes, the fewest of the season, in Indiana’s game against Louisville, in which he scored four points.
