In the Scottish Premiership last weekend, controversial VAR decisions helped Glasgow giants Celtic and Rangers, who saved points against Motherwell and Aberdeen, respectively, through penalty kicks.

Two penalties were given to the Hoops versus Motherwell. After a novel, angled run-up, Luis Palma missed one in the second half. David Turnbull then scored from the penalty spot four minutes before the end, but the goals were shared in the 90th minute thanks to a header from Jon Obika.

As James Tavernier made sure his team returned to Ibrox with a point, VAR entered the game in the last seconds of Ranger’s match against Aberdeen to punish Stefan Gartenmann for a shirt tug on Connor Goldson.

Last month, FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham recognised that negotiations were bound to happen, but he also alluded to concerns that additional VAR interference might disrupt the regular order of football games. “I know that is something we will discuss in the Ifab,” he remarked. We would be quite hesitant to play a game where players were stopped more frequently than they are now, but there will be a serious discussion about that.

Although FIFA is leading the negotiations, IFAB must accept any modifications to VAR protocols. The four British FAs, including the SFA, comprise the IFAB group and would cast votes on any proposed measures. FIFA receives four votes, while each FA is granted one vote. A total of six votes are required to ratify any modifications.
