A report from Italian outlet Calcio Mercato suggests Barcelona are plotting a swap deal with Manchester United to sign Marcus Rashford. The Catalans are reportedly willing to throw 26-year-old attacker Raphinha in the mix, but on the outside this deal seems unlikely.
Marcus Rashford has had problems this season, as the winger has regressed in a big way with his performances. The Manchester United star has struggled for relevance after scoring just twice in 14 games in the Premier League this term.
The first came against Arsenal in a 3-1 loss at the Emirates, while the second arrived as a gift from the penalty spot against Everton. His recent performance against Newcastle United saw Erik ten Hag drop the forward for their midweek win over Chelsea.
It’s a clear signal from Manchester United’s manager to remove Rashford from the firing line and give him a break. The Dutchman’s decision has fueled transfer rumours, with this particular site linking the winger to a move to Barcelona.
Rashford has faced criticism from critics and professionals alike, yet he remains an important member of Manchester United. He recently signed a new lucrative long-term contract, with Ten Hag constantly looking for ways to help his star advance.
According to the report, Barcelona is willing to provide 26-year-old forward Raphinha in exchange for Rashford. As his statistics indicate, the Brazilian has had a rough time in Catalonia. However, his influence is significant more potent for Xavi Hernandez when compared to Rashford’s for Manchester United.
Barcelona pushed hard against rivals to recruit the 26-year-old forward in the summer of 2022 and may need assistance in selling him. Their roster requires depth, and with injuries piling, Raphinha may have a more significant part to play this season. According to certain sources, Barcelona may explore selling him for £40-50 million, although that may not happen.
Raphinha is also interested in Saudi Arabia, which appears to be linked to a potential large offer to ease Barcelona’s financial problems. Xavi considers the Brazilian to be relatively valuable and will not consider trading him in the near future.
The same is true for Manchester United and Rashford, as the club cherishes the youth star and envisions a long-term future together.
