Could this be an answer to the Yankees big moves, or setting up a big move to come?
Look out, AL East. Here come the Boston Red Sox, cooking up how to answer these big moves being made in the league. The New York Yankees traded for Juan Soto and show no signs of being done there. The Toronto Blue Jays were in the running for Shohei Ohtani until the very end and are still on the hunt for a big name. The Sox have ultimately been silent when it comes to free agency, that is until right now.
Red Sox News: Veteran Catcher Roberto Perez Signed
There it is, the move we’ve all been waiting for. Right? The Red Sox have signed Roberto Perez to a deal. There are some reports saying this is a minor league contract, but that is not confirmed or for sure just yet. Of course, if that were the case, it could change if he has a monster spring.
Is this the move anyone was asking for? No. Perez played in just five MLB games last season for the San Francisco Giants and had just two hits. He was the starting catcher for Cleveland in 2019 when he won a Gold Glove award, but has been a backup (at best) since.
Now he does have a reputation of being a great teammate and has a comfort in working with different pitchers. Maybe this a long (looooong) shot play to land a big arm? But also, this could mean absolutely nothing.
This is not exactly the signing Sox fans had in mind to get into the mix of free agency.
