The New York Mets appear to be in need of a new third baseman this offseason.
New York went into the summer anticipating Ronny Mauricio, an exciting teenager, to play a significant role in 2024. He made the big leagues near the end of the 2023 season and was projected to play a lot of third base for the team the following season.
Mets fans will most likely have to wait until 2025 to see him play again after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during a Dominican Winter League game. According to The Athletic’s Will Sammon, New York will now attempt to bring in a new third baseman.
“The Mets are expected to look at external options now, even though they have others who can play third base,” Sammon added. “It’s possible that the Mets will look to the trade market to find a way to improve their position.” Any arrival would most likely be a supplemental element to what they already have.
“Mauricio hurt his knee while leading off first base in a Dominican Winter League game.” The 22-year-old was playing in the league for the fourth consecutive offseason; he was voted its (Most Valuable Player) last year, using the winter season to jumpstart a great season at Triple-A to earn a late-season promotion to the majors.”
Former Toronto Blue Jays slugger Matt Chapman is one player who could end up making sense for the Mets this offseason. He’s been discussed as a possible fit on several occasions, but he’d be a significant addition rather than a filler.
It’s too soon to determine if a shift is likely, but it wouldn’t be unusual. If the Mets miss out on players like Yoshinobu Yamamoto or other starters like Blake Snell, the team’s priority could shift to acquiring a star, and Chapman could make sense.
