Sheffield Wednesday look set for a busy January transfer window, with one position looking like a priority more than others.
Sheffield Wednesday look like they’re gearing up for an active winter transfer window after hiring a new Head of Recruitment in Kevin Beadell earlier in the month.
The former Arsenal and Manchester United figure looks set to work closely with boss Danny Rohl to give the Owls a fighting chance of survival this season.
Defeat at Coventry City yesterday has left Sheffield Wednesday nine points adrift in the Championship and Joe Crann suggested after the game that a strong showing in next month’s transfer window is the only thing that can save their season.
And it looks like a new striker or two is what Rohl needs most.
Danny Rohl knows what he needs at Sheffield Wednesday
Rohl has said on multiple occasions now that he has a clear idea of what he wants to do in next month’s window.
He’s hinted that some players could be going, most likely in a bid to make up space in the wage bill for some new faces to come in.
And even since the emergence of Bailey Cadamarteri, a new striker looks like the absolute necessity for the Owls next month.
It was previously reported that owner Dejphon Chansiri was ready to spend big on signing a quality striker on loan next month, and soon after, Birmingham City’s Scott Hogan was linked.
But there might be a better option elsewhere in the Championship.
Leeds United man Joe Gelhardt attracting interest
Leeds’ young striker Joe Gelhardt, once dubbed the ‘next Rooney’, looks set to leave Elland Road on loan next month.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at Sunderland and scored three goals in 20 Championship outings, returning to Leeds in the summer where he’s featured six times in the league this season.
Recently emerging reports have claimed that Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End are both keen on a loan move for Gelhardt, but a move to Wednesday might be both realistic and shrewd for Sheffield Wednesday.
Gelhardt is a bustling striker who showcased his physical attributes and work ethic at Sunderland last season; traits that would make him ideal for this high-energy and high-pressing Sheffield Wednesday set up under Rohl.
Although he didn’t prove so prolific with Sunderland, he still scored some important goals and played a key role in their eventual play-off finish, so there’s definitely potential with the 21-year-old who has a lot of strong competition for gametime at Leeds.
Gametime could be readily available at Hillsborough, though expect Rohl to continue with Cadamarteri who he’ll want to give plenty of exposure and experience to in 2024.
Leeds might be cautious of loaning Gelhardt a top six rival like Preston or maybe Blackburn, so a loan to a team like Sheffield Wednesday might be preferable, and it might be preferable for Gelhardt who’ll no doubt be based close to Leeds.
