Lenglet hasn’t received the recognition that would have been anticipated while on season-long loan at Aston Villa, a move that Barcelona had hoped would become permanent.
The 28-year-old started Saturday night’s FA Cup triumph over Middlesbrough. He has played nine games for Aston Villa this season across all competitions.
Barcelona is in a desperate search for a long-term solution to get out from under his contract, which expires in June 2026. Due to his agreement to postpone a portion of his pay during the pandemic’s peak, he is among the highest paid employees at the club. The remaining funds will be given to him during the term of his contract.
Lenglet is now an option for AC Milan, but the Serie A team’s January plan is only to use him as a “Plan B,” according to Mundo Deportivo. A “change of scenery,” or leaving Aston Villa, is said to be beneficial for all parties.
In essence, Barcelona needs Lenglet to be playing frequently in order to persuade a buyer to sign him in the summer.
Of course, Aston Villa has nothing to do with that.
