Sheffield United’s search for new players has led them to France, where they are reportedly pursuing defender Gerzino Nyamsi.
Nyamsi, 26, is currently on the books at Strasbourg and has been a regular in Ligue 1 this season.
Nyamsi, who is comfortable playing across the defence, particularly in central areas, has previously been considered by Eddie Howe at Newcastle. The Magpies were apparently interested in signing Nyamsi in the summer of 2022, but no deal was reached.
According to French outlet Le Parisien, Sheffield United is looking to bring in Nyamsi.
Sheffield United make approach to sign Gerzino Nyamsi
According to LP, both United and Burnley have made moves to recruit Nyamsi on loan with a buy option.
It’s reported that Nyamsi is also coveted by Lokomotiv Moscow, and that a club has even made a proposal for Nyamsi within the last 24 hours.
Interest from Russia is contingent on the facts surrounding the ongoing war in the region, which may affect Nyamsi’s final decision.
United manager Chris Wilder is believed to be interested in signing a new custodian, right-sided defender and possibly a midfielder this month if the budget allows.
The Blades have already signed Ben Brereton-Diaz, while they are still connected with a bid for Leicester’s Danny Ward.
Nyamsi would be a punt
This would be ideal for United in terms of budget and the type of deal we’d like to do this month, but it’s also a gamble.
Nyamsi has little experience in England, and Wilder has spoken about the desire to add players who can immediately enhance the first team.
Of course, we won’t pretend to be Nyamsi gurus, but players can need time to adjust to the pace of the English game, and it would be difficult for him to simply come in and fire at United’s back line.
Still, it’s another name worth considering. Nyamsi is clearly rated considering Newcastle’s previous interest, and that might be enough to encourage Wilder to push through with this one.
