Leeds and Southampton face strong competition to sign Johnson
Sadly for Leeds and Southampton, though, the competition to recruit Johnson isn’t only between them.
Instead, they must contend with fierce rivalry from elite clubs abroad.
In an effort to fight for their place in the top division, Sheffield United, a Premier League team, is reportedly willing to recruit Johnson. Meanwhile, Scottish powerhouse Rangers are also interested in acquiring the Hammers defender. These reports were obtained by Football Insider.
Ben Johnson’s situation at West Ham United
The aforementioned report is released at a time when Ben Johnson is facing some challenges at West Ham.
The teenage defender’s contract is set to expire at the end of June this year, leaving just six months remaining on it.
As of right now, it appears that no new contract is imminent; rumours have it that the 23-year-old has rejected multiple offers from the team to remain in East London longer.
It is probable that Johnson made that choice because he is currently not playing a lot of games under David Moyes.
For instance, he has only made six appearances for West Ham’s senior team thus far this season, with only two of those games occurring in the Premier League.
This comes after Johnson recorded 29 appearances in claret and white during a respectable season for the Hammers in terms of appearances.
Six more occurred during the Hammers’ successful Europa Conference League season, while the remaining 17 occurred in the Premier League.
Johnson came through the Hammers’ youth divisions before making his way into the first squad, and he has made 93 senior appearances overall.
