Francis Lee, a striker for Manchester City, was honored after passing away at the age of 79 after a protracted fight with cancer.
Between 1967 and 1974, Lee played for City for seven years, tallying 148 goals in 330 games.
n his first season after joining from Bolton Wanderers, Lee fired City to the league title, their last until 2012.
He also won the 1969 FA Cup and the 1970 League Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup, which was their only continental title until Pep Guardiola’s side lifted the Champions League in June. Lee left City in 1974 for for Derby, where he ended up retiring. He later served as City’s chairman between 1994 and 1998.
After a protracted fight with cancer, Franny died early this
morning, according to a statement from City. “His wife Gill and kids Charlotte, Jonny, and Nik said he’ll be greatly missed and thank everyone for their nice thoughts.
“Everyone at Manchester City would like to offer their sympathies to Francis’ friends and family during this extremely trying period. Flags are flying at half-mast all across the City Football Academy and Etihad Stadium out of respect. The club will continue to pay tribute in the coming days.
Eight titles in all were won by Lee throughout his career, six of which were with City. He scored 10 goals in 27 games for England.
