When asked why Stoke City had suffered in the Championship for so long under a string of managers who had succeeded elsewhere but not here, John Coates sounded like a man who had given the question a lot of consideration early in an hour-long audience with supporters.
The question of Stoke’s team’s standing among the club’s all-time greats was only debated in 2015, but since then, the decline has been painful and protracted. Since their relegation in 2018, they have had five consecutive Championship bottom half finishes.
