Stuart Kettlewell insists Motherwell only have themselves to blame for their cup exit at the hands of Championship side Morton.
The Steelmen are the first casualties of the Scottish Cup last 16 after going to Cappielow and coming a cropper, falling behind to an own goal and then George Oakley’s finish with Jack Vale’s reply not enough to get them going again. It was a deserved victory for the home side and Kettlewell was fuming with his men.
Although he maintains that the coaching staff prepared the players for what lied ahead, he claims they were unable to withstand the onslaught. This implies that he feels as though they are the architects of their own cup exit and have shot themselves in the foot.
“We knew this was going to be a different game than the one on Tuesday,” the Well manager stated. There would be complete differences in the game’s pac
e, appearance, quantity of passes completed, and area of the pitch used for play.
“We weren’t able to carry out what we had braced and prepared for. We didn’t seem to be able to withstand the long throws that kept entering our box, which led to the first goal’s corner kick that we gave up.
“And then the second half, which is just that ragged nature.” All of our efforts have been based on structure and discipline, so when the second half rolls around and you start chasing the game, you end up all over the place.
“We really don’t put Morton to the test until the very end, and we only have ourselves to blame for that. I’ll always give them credit for what they accomplished, even though it wasn’t good enough in my opinion. and the kind of games that the league will play.
“We’re definitely not happy, but we need to lick our victories. That we can focus on the league is not the case for consolation. Not at all.
