Paul Robinson discussed Illan Meslier’s performance for Leeds United.
Paul Robinson has criticized Illan Meslier’s deterioration in play and contrasted it with Guglielmo Vicario’s attempt to maintain his form for several months while playing for Tottenham.
The past year has been bad for Meslier’s reputation, and there are rumors that Leeds United may be willing to let him go in the January transfer window.
Despite Meslier’s impressive play in the Championship, a move away from Leeds and potentially even out of English football could be good for his growth. It is unlikely that Meslier has a long-term future with Leeds.
Following the Whites’ inaugural Premier League campaign, the Frenchman received high accolades, with the goalkeeper distinguishing out as an important member of Marcelo Bielsa’s squad.
In their first season back in the top division in nearly two decades, Leeds finished ninth in the standings while giving up 54 goals.
Meslier had proven himself at Elland Road as a goalkeeper of the caliber of the Premier League and had assisted the Yorkshire team in being promoted.
He was, however, benched in the closing weeks of their final season in the top flight in favor of Joel Robles by Sam Allardyce.
Over the past year or so, Meslier’s reputation has suffered, and Leeds is apparently now willing to sell him in January.
What has Paul Robinson said regarding Illan Meslier?
On Caught Offside TV, Robinson compared Meslier to Guglielmo Vicario, the summer acquisition who took Hugo Lloris’ job as Tottenham Hotspur’s starting goalkeeper.
The former Spurs goalkeeper has warned against getting too excited about Vicario’s recent success, citing Meslier as an example of a player who was unable to sustain a high level of performance for an extended period of time.
According to Robinson, through TBR, “Vicario is the future, but it’s difficult to do it over a number of months.”
“At Leeds, we watched Illan Meslier do it.
“He was exceptional, and everyone said he would succeed Hugo Lloris, but that was difficult to maintain.
“The most important quality for a goalkeeper is longevity, sustainability,”
The fact that Leeds is currently playing in the Championship has not diminished Meslier’s importance to the team.
The 23-year-old has participated in each of the nine league games Daniel Farke has coached this year.
This season, Leeds will try to win immediate re-promotion back to the Premier League.
Whether Meslier will stay with the team beyond the January transfer window is still uncertain.
Karl Darlow is another option for Leeds to contend with at Elland Road, although since joining the Yorkshire club in the summer, he has only made two appearances, both of which came in the EFL Cup.
Following a 3-1 defeat against Southampton the previous weekend, Farke’s team is currently ranked 10th in the standings.
The Whites’ upcoming match is against QPR on Wednesday night at home.
Does Leeds United have a future for Illan Meslier?
Although Meslier has played admirably for Leeds thus far this season, his reputation has suffered as a result of his participation in the Championship rather than the Premier League.
However, a departure from Leeds in January seems like a possibility, and that would be a chance to return to the top flight of football.
Meslier’s growth at this point might benefit from a transfer away from English football.
The 23-year-old goalie still has lots of time to restore his reputation and is still relatively young for a goalkeeper, but it doesn’t appear probable that he will accomplish it by continuing at Leeds.
