Tony Docherty reveals key players back fit with the squad#

According to manager Tony Docherty, he is getting two more important players back in shape for Saturday’s match against Ross County.

“Madman” Antonio Portales is recovering from a protracted hamstring injury and should return much sooner than expected.

The Dundee defender hasn’t played since the beginning of December due to an injury sustained during a 3-1 loss to Rangers at Ibrox.

His original plan was for him to stay away until March.

But he might be prepared to play at Hibs the following weekend.

“I’m hoping he’ll be available for the squad to play Hibs if he puts in a good week of training next week,” Docherty stated.

“Antonio is deserving of much praise. The last time he did this, I believe he returned three weeks early.

“He has two weeks on us this time.

And it’s entirely due to the way he operates.

“He attacks the gym, the rehab, and all the individual stuff like a madman.”

“Antonio is an excellent professional, as evidenced by the fact that he will likely return two or even three weeks sooner than one might anticipate following such a hamstring injury.

“He sets a great example for attitude and mentality among all the players in the squad.”

Duo set to return

While Diego Pineda, a native of Portales, is still sidelined due to a calf injury, Docherty is hoping to have more of his injured stars return to action.

Throughout the winter, there has been a long list of absentees.

Nonetheless, the Dens manager welcomed back Ricki Lamie and Aaron Donnelly during last weekend’s match against St Johnstone.

Malachi Boateng and Curtis Main were not present for that match, but they are available to play against Ross County in the Premiership this Saturday. More players may return the following week.

“Curtis Main has had a chest infection since St Mirren,” Docherty stated. He is back because he trained on Thursday.

“On Tuesday, Ricki Lamie participated in the reserve game.

“Antonio Portales, Ryan Howley, and Charlie Reilly are all making significant advancements. Hopefully, they’ll return the following week.

“Boateng had an issue with his groin but he’s back again. I thought Mo Sylla put in a fantastic performance so I have a selection headache there.

“And at the business end of the season I’m getting everybody back fit which is really encouraging.

“I’m delighted with that and the physio department deserve great credit.”
