Couple’s TikTok shares tale of new coffee shop open in Kilmarnock’

The Titch Coffee House owners have shared their exciting new journey on TikTok as they renovate the space.

A Kilmarnock couple is getting ready for their Friday, March 1 debut by sharing on TikTok their most recent restoration experience.

The 33-year-old Becky Melville and her 36-year-old husband Stuart said they are “excited” about the opening of their new company, Titch Coffee House. The company, which has its address at 57 Titchfield Street, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm and on Sunday from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm.

“With Stuart’s construction experience and my background in interior design, we have tackled the majority of the renovation ourselves,” Becky said to Ayrshire Live.

“Even though we have experience renovating properties, we have long entertained the notion of starting a bakery or coffee shop. We were discouraged by the number of shuttered stores on Titchfield Street when we first began our remodelling effort there. We believed that creating a speciality coffee shop would be a fantastic way to draw more people to the street because we love to visit areas that have a lot of independent stores and cafes.

“There are already some great coffee providers in Kilmarnock, but you can never have too much of a good thing, right?”

Becky made the decision to record the makeover on TikTok while she was remodelling the space, posting weekly updates there. Hundreds of people watch the videos, which depict how Becky and her husband turn a former hair salon into their ideal coffee business.

“I think a lot of people have thought about opening a coffee shop, so I thought it might be interesting to see what actually goes into it,” the woman stated. Prior to our opening, I have been providing weekly updates; but, starting this week, I will provide daily updates.

“We’ll be sharing more behind-the-scenes photos of our coffee shop operations along with educational articles about how to make our drinks and other things.

The Titch Coffee House will offer drinks, fresh pastries, bread and bakes. The bakeries will be on rotation so the selection will change each day but there will always be the house-filled focaccia on the menu

In order to ensure that the food selection matched the quality of the drinks, Becky and Stuart have been studying and sampling for months in order to compile their list of favourites for their new business.

According to Becky, “our goal was to identify the best Scottish supplier in each category when we first started thinking about the shop.” The Pain au Chocolat from Jeju Bakery and our hot chocolate made with real cocoa chocolate flakes and toasted Italian meringue on top will probably be two of our menu items that stick out the most.

“We offer food and beverages in addition to a modest retail area. Some of our favourite local producers, such as Sorores from Dunlop and Clod & Pebble from Craigie, will be carried by us. It’s the ideal place to pick up a gift or just treat yourself.

The pair acknowledged that working on the unit upgrades was “challenging” because they had never opened a hospitality business before.

There have been many late nights and a few arguments, but we have worked things out as we’ve gone along, according to Becky. Along the road, we’ve also met several fantastic vendors who have been really helpful in offering us guidance.

We’ve been at it for six weeks now. Thankfully, everything has gone very well thus far. It was really cold for the first two weeks that we were without power. It’s been a lot of joy to develop this for us and to share it with our customers quickly as I usually design for other people.”
