QPR’s Lyndon Dykes was of interest to Burnley and Rangers in the summer, but that looks unlikely to reappear this summer.
The R’s have struggled to finish in the lower half of the table this season; a dismal start under Gareth Ainsworth left them in a depressing situation, but there is cause for hope with Marti Cifuentes’ hiring.
The West London team has depended on the achievements of players like Chris Willock, Lyndon Dykes, and Ilias Chair in recent years.
However, these players haven’t performed as well as they did in prior seasons, so QPR has had trouble moving forward. Between now and the end of the season, they will hope that things change, and these players will personally want to regain their form.
Supporters have been frustrated with Dykes for a while now, and this term has been no different. He no longer starts for the team under Cifuentes because of his lack of consistency in front of goal.
It seems like a long time ago, and it would be surprising to see either Burnley or Rangers pick up the striker again in the forthcoming window. Both teams were allegedly interested in the player in the summer.
During the summer transfer window, the Daily Mail revealed that Burnley and Rangers were two of the several teams interested in signing Dykes.
This interest arose from reports that Millwall had a £3 million proposal for the Scottish striker rejected by Millwall, and that Blackburn Rovers had expressed interest in the forward during the January transfer window.
Stoke City was also mooted as a potential destination in addition to these interested parties, however no move for the player materialised during the summer.
Burnley and Rangers transfer interest is unlikely to resurface for Lyndon Dykes
To preserve his value and continue in the W12, Dykes actually stayed at QPR and inked a new contract that will keep him there until the summer of 2028.
His current form for the R’s is unlikely to draw any serious offers from those who have previously been linked, assuming that wasn’t enough to turn off potential suitors.
This season, he has only scored four goals, underperforming his xG of 4.66, while also missing four significant opportunities and scoring once every 521 minutes on average. Dykes works very hard when the ball is not in his hands, but he has trouble connecting with teammates when it counts. According to Sofascore, he has not given up a single assist or created a significant opportunity.
It’s hardly shocking that Dykes has lost his starting position on the team given his poor performance this season—Cifuentes now prefers Sinclair Armstrong and the new addition, Michael Frey.
It would be surprising to see a club higher up the English pyramid like Burnley, who will want to be competing for promotion to the Premier League or perhaps still in the top flight, or an ambitious club like Rangers splash the cash on Dykes right now. Dykes has been a streaky scorer in the past, so a return to form in the future is not out of the question.
