‘The Welsh master’ – Outcast Rhys Patchell sends message to Warren Gatland with superb Super Rugby Pacific start*

Wales international fly-half Rhys Patchell gave a fantastic performance for the Highlanders against the Blues on Friday in Melbourne, but his incredible off-load made an even bigger impression.

In their Super Rugby Pacific match, which the Blues ultimately won 37-29, the Highlanders mounted an attack halfway between the halfway mark and the Blues’ 22-meter line with the score tied at 5-5 following early tries from Sean Withy and Hoskins Sotutu.

Withy received a pass from Folau Fakatava and raced forward, offloading to the charging Patchell, who attracted the attention of a few defenders.

extraordinary aptitude
The 30-year-old was fouled in possession, but he quickly got a pass out of the back of his hand to Jonah Nareki, who was inside the Blues’ 22 when he pulled in the final defender and found Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens, who made an easy run-in for the Highlanders’ second five-point basket.

It was a masterfully performed try, and Patchell’s incredible display of talent had AAMI Park fans in stitches. His amazing offload also won him a tonne of acclaim from TV pundits, who even called Patchell “the Welsh master.”
