Children receiving specialised cancer treatment in Horsham and surrounding West Sussex towns will now receive their care in a new facility in London.
It has been decided to transfer paediatric cancer care from the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton to the Evelina Children’s Hospital in London, according to a statement released by NHS leaders today, March 14.
Parents of some Horsham children receiving treatment at Sutton are appalled by the decision, claiming that their children’s travel time to cancer appointments will more than treble.
A petition against the transfer was started the previous year. The leaders of the NHS assert, however, that a thorough procedure was followed in order to reach the decision to make the change. This process included a public survey and an options-appraisal process that involved clinical advisers, parents, charities, nurses, and research personnel.
