After scoring his first Morecambe goal in the team’s 2-1 victory over Accrington Stanley, Nelson Khumbeni was “over the moon.”
Khumbeni could not have chosen a better moment to launch the Shrimps against their neighbourhood rivals.
He said on the club website, “I have been waiting a long time, everyone has been telling me to shoot.”
When I eventually reached the box, I was able to shoot at my feeble peg, and it went in. I simply had my eye on the ball when I struck it; I didn’t really see it go in. Fortunately, it entered!
“It was a huge relief,” I was looking forward to it for 12 or 13 games, and a derby is especially sweet.
After going out on loan in January, the Wanderers young player has established himself as a regular starter at the Mazuma Stadium and gained valuable League Two experience.
Not only did Ged Brannan’s team secure bragging rights, but the victory also put an end to a run of four straight losses and brought them within three points of the play-offs.
Khumbeni continued, “(The first goal) was going to be vital.” “We needed a response after dropping four straight games; we had to make an impression.
“Though we had been practicing and playing well, things hadn’t gone our way. Fortunately, that changed today.
We spent the entire week discussing (the significance of) it being a derby. We needed a response, we needed to play well, and we needed to win, especially after four losses. I believe we were deserving.”
When Morecambe hosts fifth-place Barrow on Monday afternoon, they’ll be hoping to improve on their performance.
“There are no easy games at the end of the season,” the young Wanderers player emphasised. “You approach every game with the intention of winning, especially when playing Barrow, who are present and close by.
It will always be a tough game because we are close, but all we have to do is carry over this performance into the next and enjoy it.
