How Colchester’s players will be “fueled” by Danny Cowley against league leaders

COLCHESTER United might be the spoilers tonight when they meet a Stockport County team that can win promotion.

However, Danny Cowley, the head coach of the U, will only be concerned with seeing his own squad play for the entire ninety-plus minutes and earn a valuable victory over the league leaders.

With four games remaining, a victory by Stockport combined with a Mansfield Town loss at home against Forest Green Rovers would be sufficient to guarantee Dave Challinor’s team promotion back to League One.

Cowley is expecting a full performance from his Colchester team against Stockport after watching them lose 2-1 at the weekend despite having a one-goal lead against promotion-chasing Wrexham.

The U’s have six games left and are one point outside of safety.

“This football club will be great again but we have to absolutely demand standards and that means playing for 90 minutes; not playing for 60 minutes,” Cowley stated.

“To be honest, it has no significance for me. Courageous defeatists? I don’t wake up in the morning because of that.

“I’m a winner; I enjoy and am accustomed to winning. I anticipate winning, as do my teams, and we must rise to the occasion and feel the hurt (of the Wrexham game).”

“They disappoint each other, and that bothers me; it gives us energy for Tuesday.

“We must possess a strong physical and mental foundation.

“In a very short amount of time, we have a lot of games.

“I tell them that I’m their best buddy.

“I’m the first to clap them on the back and say ‘well done’ when they perform well.

“But also, I’ll be the first to look them in the eye and tell them if they come up short and don’t do their job.”
