Charlie Kelman, a loanee from Wigan Athletic, acknowledges that he is eager to be called up by the USA for the Summer Olympics later this year!
The Scottish-born father and English-born mother are the parents of the Basildon-born striker, who is currently on loan at the DW Stadium from Queens Park Rangers.
Most importantly, though, Charlie’s father acquired US citizenship and stayed in the country long enough to pass it on to Charlie, who grew up in the country extensively.
From the time he was four years old until the age of ten, Kelman lived in Dallas with his father. When he was fourteen, he returned for another year and became involved in the youth setup at FC Dallas, an MLS Western Conference team.
The frontman stated, “There are a lot of very, very good players that are my age, but I’d like to think that I’m up there (in contention for a call-up)” following his brace in Latics’ midweek draw at Charlton Athletic.
“I demonstrated that to Charlton. I’m hoping to score goals for the next three games, and you never know where that could lead.
“I’m keeping a close eye on it, so maybe I can get a late call in!”
The Summer Olympics of this year will begin in Paris on July 26. This is a few weeks after the Copa América in the United States.
Only three players over the age restriction are permitted to be included in each country’s 18-man Olympic squad, with 15 of the players having to be 23 or younger according to the regulations of the competition.
The majority of the more prominent US players are anticipated to play in the Copa América on American soil, and Kelman is hoping to travel to France.
Apart from Paris, which is the host city, other French cities hosting Olympic matches are Bordeaux, Décines-Charpieu, Marseille, Nantes, Nice, and Saint-Étienne. The gold-medal match between the two winners will take place on Friday, August 9.
At the age of 22, Kelman has already competed internationally for the United States at the under-18 and under-20 levels. During his first camp, he scored in a friendly match against the youth team of Sporting Kansas.
