Blackpool head coach Neil Critchley has admitted that he would like to keep Sheffield Wednesday star George Byers at the club on a permanent basis, following a relatively successful loan spell thus far.
After joining from Swansea City at the beginning of the 2021–2022 season, the midfield player has been a part of Hillsborough’s roster for the last three seasons. But Owls manager Danny Rohl chose to allow Byers to go to Bloomfield Road on a six-month loan in January.
During his brief tenure with the Seasiders, the 27-year-old has made 15 appearances in all competitions under Critchley. He has one assist in a 4-1 thumping of Bolton Wanderers back in March.
As of right now, Blackpool sits one point behind Lincoln City in the final play-off spot. Blackpool will advance to the play-offs if Critchley’s team defeats Reading at the Select Car Leasing Stadium and the Imps and Oxford United lose ground on the last day of competition.
Although he did not play in the play-offs, Byers has experience winning promotions to the Championship, having been a member of Sheffield Wednesday’s team that overcame all odds to defeat Barnsley in the championship game at Wembley and Peterborough United in the semi-final.
Byers had made 22 Championship appearances this season prior to moving to Bloomfield Road three months ago, but Critchley is aiming to finalise a permanent agreement for the midfield player in the summer—though the manager has acknowledged that it’s out of Blackpool’s control.
