Conway’s foul in the 32nd minute gave the home team the lead after he had gone around goalie Dillon Phillips. For his 12th goal of the year, the striker stepped up to send Phillips the wrong way with a well-struck penalty.
Twine extended the lead in the 57th minute with an incredible 25-yard free kick that he curled his right foot over to hit the wall.
Though clearly second best on the day, Rotherham rarely threatened and stuck to their assignment with a game face.
Following a lacklustre campaign, newly reinstated manager Evans announced that he was drafting a report for chairman Tony Stewart outlining the club’s best course of action.
Evans remarked, “I am confident that we can bounce back next season, but this is one of the biggest challenges I have taken on.”
“I’m working on a document that will outline my goals and strategies for getting us back into the Championship for the chairman.
“I will be brutally honest, as he has requested.” Next week, I will deliver the document, and then the real work will start.
Evans questioned the penalty call, but he also acknowledged that the result could not be disputed by his squad.
“We were clearly second best today. Bristol City were technically better than us, but I was proud of the way my players stuck to their task,” he added.
“Tom Eaves had a fantastic opportunity to start the scoring. They will argue that their keeper overreached himself to make the save, but goals decide games, thus it was a crucial play.
“I wish we had taken the lead so we could have seen how we performed. However, it was not to be, and the referee erred in awarding the penalty.
