Hull City’s owner has disclosed that he fired Liam Rosenior due to the club’s style of play.
Despite a good season in which the Tigers just missed out on a berth in the Championship play-offs, Rosenior was abruptly fired by the club’s Turkish owner, Acun Ilicali, this week. The owner, who only gave Rosenior a new long-term deal last December, has spoken openly about the concerns that occurred in the second part of the season, leading to this decision.
Ilicali told talkSPORT on Wednesday morning that he wants to play the game more offensively. He told Hull Live: “When there is a difference of opinion between the coach’s side and the ownership and football mind of the team, it is not ideal for the team to embark on a long-term journey.
Liam is a fantastic guy and a very good coach. I think he’s such a nice person but at the end of the day, we have to decide what is best for the club.
Despite Hull scoring 14 goals in their final seven games of the season, Ilicali prefers a more forward-thinking style of play. He continued, “Liam has a football mindset that I absolutely admire. But the football I want to see in my team is not the style that Liam is playing.”
When questioned by host Jim White as to why he offered Rosenior a new contract midway through the season, Ilicali explained that things began to shift from January onwards. He revealed: “The separation started after January. In January, we brought in offensive players. The football mind of the team is making the recruitment an attacking style.
You must choose a coach who shares the same mindset as the recruiter. Before January, we were in the same place as Liam. After that, I want to jump in my seat and watch the squad. I want the audience to get more and more excited.
