Police in Nottinghamshire have shut down a convenience store after discovering that it was selling cigarettes and alcohol to minors. During a test police purchase, The Buy and Save in Stanton Hill, Sutton-in-Ashfield, sold a big knife to a child, and two machetes were discovered behind the counter.
During a police check, a significant amount of cannabis-infused candies were discovered behind the counter. The store also marketed vaping products to minors. Earlier this month, the business was ordered to close by Nottinghamshire Police and Ashfield District Council in response to complaints.
The shop will be forced to close for a minimum of three months as a result of the order, which was given under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act and confirmed by Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, December 1. The order will also result in a necessary licencing review.
Residents reportedly lodged several complaints over antisocial activity related to the store, including aggressive driving, littering, and the careless usage of pyrotechnics outdoors. Ashfield district commander Inspector John Hewitt stated: “This business has sadly become a magnet for antisocial behaviour due to its continued and reckless disregard for the law.”
“Trading Standards and our colleagues at the local council collaborated to take this swift action after we consistently received complaints regarding this location. There’s a reason why regulations pertaining to licencing and other retail restrictions exist, and we will not put up with individuals who consistently choose to disregard them.
