Ollie Norwood issues emotional Sheffield United message

Ollie Norwood has shared an image of his final day at Sheffield United’s training ground, as he reflected on ‘the best’ period in his career.

The midfielder joined the Blades on an initial loan, before the move was made permanent in January 2019, and it’s fair to say it’s proven to be outstanding business by the Yorkshire side.

Thanks to his outstanding performances in the middle of the park, Norwood has grown to be a modern-day Bramall Lane favourite. Under Chris Wilder, the Northern Ireland international was instrumental in the team’s promotion to the Premier League.

He would remain an important player as Sheffield United overcame all odds to finish ninth in their return to the top division.

Even though the following years saw some low periods, Norwood would again be crucial to the Blades’ promotion last season, this time under Paul Heckingbottom.

Ollie Norwood to leave Sheffield United

Nevertheless, this season has been difficult, and there have always been questions regarding Norwood’s future because his contract expires in the summer.

Despite his background in the lower leagues, it appears the team is seeking a new beginning and to provide opportunities for younger players, as the 33-year-old’s departure from the Blades was revealed last week.

This will enable the supporters to properly honour Norwood when the team plays its final game of the season this weekend at home against Spurs. However, given that Norwood has played for the red and white for the previous six years, it is obviously an emotional time for him.

Additionally, Norwood posted a photo of the training pitch to his Instagram story along with the words “one last time” and an emoticon depicting tears.

Norwood said that it had been “the best.”

It remains to be seen what the next step is for Norwood, but his only focus right now will be trying to end this difficult season on a high when they welcome Spurs to Bramall Lane, in what’s sure to be a challenging day for the midfielder.

Sheffield United’s summer plans

It was always going to be a big summer for the Blades after this miserable campaign, and the ownership situation means they won’t be receiving a lot of funding to make those improvements.

Thus, the next three months will be difficult for Wilder and the hiring staff, but they have begun to make some significant decisions, one of which being Norwood’s departure.

The midfielder has been a fantastic asset to Sheffield United over the years, and the supporters will always remember him for his part in two promotions and a top-half Premier League finish. This will be clear from the reception he gets on Sunday.

Though many will concur that this is the ideal moment for a change of direction, it will be fascinating to watch the Sheffield United starting lineup for their August Championship return match.
