Barnsley are on the hunt for a new boss after parting ways with Neill Collins one game before the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
The shock timing of the decision and failure to name a replacement meant Martin Devaney led the Tykes in the play-offs. There, they were beaten by Bolton Wanderers, with Oxford United ultimately emerging victorious to join Portsmouth and Derby County in the Championship.
The South Yorkshire are still looking for a new leader, and it appears that they will soon make the much-needed appointment.
following their agreement on a compensation amount, Barnsley and Cheltenham Town manager Darrell Clarke are still in talks.
It comes amid reports on Thursday morning stating that Clarke is poised to leave Cheltenham, who he led to the brink of survival before dropping to League Two.
A deserved move
Fans of Barnsley may first be skeptical given that Clarke was demoted at Cheltenham Town.
Despite all the odds against him, he took over a squad that was in a terrible situation and managed to bring them within a hair’s breadth of survival. Given his excellent performance with the Robins, it is not surprising that he is being connected to a prominent position at Oakwell.
From 2014 to 2018, Clarke managed Bristol Rovers for a considerable amount of time. He has previously managed Walsall and Port Vale, helping the latter club advance from League Two.
The outcome of the talks with Barnsley remains to be seen, but with a compensation package in place, it appears like the Tykes may succeed with this appointment.
Another Robins raid?
With Barnsley swooping in for another popular Cheltenham manager, fans of the latter can be forgiven for feeling a sense of deja vu.
Before moving to Oakwell, Michael Duff, of course, had a successful tenure as manager of the Gloucestershire team. Clarke might be the most recent person to go down that route.
After a challenging search for their new boss, the Tykes are eager for this much-needed appointment. Although many names have been mentioned and applicants have been removed from the list, they will be trying to move this one through because Clarke has been paid.
