Where would West Brom be this season without John Swift, who has left his mark on the team in recent weeks with a string of excellent performances?
Swift appears to have joined the long list of injured players, leaving the field after Birmingham’s loss with what Carlos Corberan reports is a calf injury [Birmingham Live, 7 October]. The Baggies may soon find out.
Since the team’s attacking depth has already been impacted by the injuries to Jeremy Sarmiento and Josh Maja, they will now be concerned about Swift’s imminent availability. Swift was the player that filled in for them.
Swift joins the list of injured players that also includes Sarmiento, Maja, and Daryl Dike, all of whom would typically be there to contribute to the season’s dearth of goals.
But that supply of ambitions has come from an unexpected place. Swift’s goal against Birmingham City in the Midlands derby brought his season total to six, which is now equal to last year’s total.
Swift has already matched his goal total from 45 games last time out with 11 goals and one assist in just 11 appearances this time around. However, he still needs to accumulate nine assists to match his total from last year.
Swift has scored three goals and provided an assist for four goals during his previous five games. Looking further back, this total now stands at six in his previous eight games, with strong goal-scoring form being crucial to Carlos Corberan’s team’s success.
Swift was able to distinguish herself as a crucial performer despite the setback to Birmingham. His performance and significance to the squad were demonstrated by his 100% dribbling success rate, 35 successful passes, 100% crossing success, two of three long balls reaching their goal, and winning five of his six duels in 73 minutes of play. The fact that Swift’s injury occurred just before a two-week international break will give him some time to rehabilitate and, at the very least, limit the amount of games he will miss, which will be good news for Corberan.
Dike is expected to be sidelined until at least December, although no specific timetable can be given for his comeback due to the nature of his injury. Sarmiento and Maja might return in November.
The Baggies will be waiting with baited breath for updates on Swift’s injury, but they are hopeful that he will return after the two-week break and continue to establish himself as a star in this team.
