Leigh Leopards are hitting their stride after a bumpy start to the season. On the field, they have started to get results after an injury hit start saw them drop back from Super League play-off contention in the early weeks of the season. Off the field, they are beginning to put plans in place for 2025.
The Leopards were hit by a string of high-profile departures. John Asiata and Oliver Holmes will move to Hull FC for 2025, with Zak Hardaker likely to join them. Tom Amone will take an up offer to join the Canterbury Bulldogs, and Kai O’Donnell is also set to return to the NRL.
However, news that Adrian Lam has signed an extended contract means the Leopards can begin to plan for next season. Now, there has been an update regarding one of their potential targets, who came close to joining the Leopards earlier in 2024.
Earlier in the season, David Armstrong appeared to be on his way to join the Leopards. But Leigh does not have a quota space open, and striker Ben Nakubuwai was unable to go to Castleford across the Pennines due to an injury. Armstrong never signed with the Leopards; instead, he made his debut for the Newcastle Knights.
The head coach of the Knights provided an update on Armstrong’s future in an interview with the Newcastle Herald. He said that he believes the Leigh target will stick with the Knights after an offer was made for him.”It seems like he’s content here, and there’s an offer in for him,” he remarked.
It’s been quite the month for him, but he’s handled it incredibly well, and he has everyone’s admiration.
“You would want to think that loyalty will play a factor, but there will undoubtedly be others who are observing him right now.
“We’ve stuck with him and given him his opportunity so I’m hoping we can come to an agreement.”
