Newcastle United wanted to sign a ‘number six’ this summer, but failed to do so.
The Magpies brought in one midfielder, splashing out on Sandro Tonali, who became the club’s second most expensive signing ever behind Alexander Isak.
The Italian is enduring a mixed start to life on Tyneside, while Bruno Guimaraes is continuing to operate as Newcastle‘s ‘number six’ in midfield.
Meanwhile, a player who Eddie Howe tried to sign is experiencing low after low following the summer transfer window.
Newcastle tried to sign Kalvin Phillips
Newcastle United showed interest in signing Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City this summer, following a tough first year at the Etihad.
While he won the treble at his new club, Phillips was barely involved. That led to speculation that he could leave Man City after just 12 months, with Newcastle keen to rescue the England international.
However, they were disappointingly told that Phillips had no intention of leaving City. Instead, he would fight for his place under Pep Guardiola.
It was a brave decision at the time, but one that is looking more and more foolish each passing week.

Phillips backed his ability by staying at Man City, but his decision has not resulted in more minutes. Nor has a suspension for Rodri, who has missed the last three games after being sent off against Nottingham Forest.
The 27-year-old did start against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup, but his performance did not lead to an opportunity in the Premier League.
Phillips is still yet to start a league game for Man City this season, and was an unused substitute against Arsenal on Sunday.
Instead, Guardiola opted to go for Rico Lewis in the middle of the park – an 18-year-old who is actually a fullback.
This decision shocked former Arsenal defender Martin Keown, who spoke about Phillips’ situation on Stadium Astro ahead of the game at the Emirates.
“It’s embarrassing for Phillips, isn’t it?” he said.
Michael Brown replied: “Phillips – that relationship is going to be so difficult now to repair.”
Even with Rodri suspended, Phillips can’t get in the team.
Keown is right – it is embarrassing for Phillips, who must majorly regret his decision to stay at Manchester City during the summer transfer window.
He had plenty of suitors, one of which was Newcastle, but backed himself to force his way into the City side. That is yet to happen, despite his defensive midfield rival being suspended.
While he might have confidence in his ability, it simply is not going to work out for Phillips at Man City.
