Negative Ally McCoist prediction likely to be just the start for Sheffield United and Chris Wilder

Sheffield United are preparing for life back in the Championship after their relegation from the Premier League.

The Blades were only promoted to the Premier League in the 2022-23 season, but they were relegated straight back to the Championship after an incredibly disappointing campaign.

United finished bottom of the table after winning just three games all season and accumulating a total of 16 points, and the 104 goals they conceded is the most of any team in top flight history.

Manager Chris Wilder failed to make an impact after replacing Paul Heckingbottom in December, but the 56-year-old has led the Blades to promotion from the Championship before, and it could be a busy summer as he looks to rebuild his squad.

A host of senior players have left Bramall Lane at the end of their contracts, including Wes Foderingham, Jordan Amissah, George Baldock, Max Lowe, Chris Basham and Oliver Norwood, and there are likely to be plenty more incomings and outgoings over the coming months.

However, The Daily Telegraph reported last month that an American consortium are in talks with United owner Prince Abdullah about a potential takeover, and that is having a big impact on the club’s transfer business.

Without a question, Wilder has a lot of work ahead of him this summer, and with the club experiencing so much instability, it’s unclear if the Blades will be able to contend for an early return to the Premier League the following season.

Ally McCoist, a pundit for Football League World, said that he does not think United would be among the Championship’s contenders for promotion the following season. Instead, he believes Leeds United, Luton Town, and West Bromwich Albion will advance.

“My first choice would be Leeds. “I believe they will overcome the disappointment of losing in the playoff final,” McCoist remarked.”They could easily give up, but I don’t think they will because of their support system.” I see them moving up the ranks.

“I would love to see Luton Town promoted again, but I don’t see Sheffield United making a comeback.

“They may have been demoted, but among the teams that were eliminated from the league the previous year, they seemed to have given it their all.

“Sheffield United and Burnley never really got going, but teams always knew they were playing when they faced Luton. I believe they can succeed as well if they can maintain the same attitude and siege mentality that they have at home. Even though they failed last year, I still thought the caliber of the performances was great, so I’d love to see them succeed. To be honest with you, I anticipate a more steady challenge from West Brom in the upcoming campaign. They were a different squad that was somewhat ancillary, and I believe they

It is difficult to disagree with McCoist’s view that United will not be promoted next season, and it is an opinion that many will share.

After such an underwhelming season in the Premier League, a huge rebuild is needed at Bramall Lane, but the takeover situation is making it incredibly challenging for Wilder.

It was reported this week that Peterborough United defender Harrison Burrows was set to have a medical with the Blades, but The Star claim that a deal “may rest on increased funds either from a takeover or the sale of one of their valuable assets”.

Burrows would be an excellent signing for United having scored an impressive 12 goals and provided 18 assists in 58 games for Posh in League One this season, but he will surely be on the radar of other Championship clubs, and he could potentially join one of the Blades’ promotion rivals if they are unable to seal a deal.

The uncertainty surrounding the takeover is also impeding efforts to sign Alan Browne of Preston North End and Gabriel Osho of Luton Town. Additionally, Luke Ayling, who was released by Leeds last month and moved permanently to Middlesbrough, was not signed by United.

The loss of the seasoned trio would be devastating to Wilder. In addition to the effect on the club’s recruitment, the Blades are having trouble signing players like John Egan, Ben Osborn, and Oli McBurnie to new deals.

Wilder’s options may be further limited as a result of United’s rumored plans to transfer Anel Ahmedhodzic, Vinicius Souza, Anis Slimane, and Benie Traore this summer. They may also try to cash in on Gustavo Hamer.

Many of the club’s current issues would be resolved if the buyout was successful, but as United is all too familiar with, it can frequently be a drawn-out process with no assurance that it would actually go. With just over a month before the start of the season, supporters will be growing more and more anxious.

Given his dismal performance since rejoining the team for a second stint in December, there are concerns about whether Wilder is the best person to lead the team going ahead.

After stints at Middlesbrough and Watford, Wilder was probably lucky to land a position at the Blades. Although he has the backing of the fans, he will need to get off to a strong start in the upcoming campaign to avoid pressure.

Next season, United will begin with a -2 point deficit. While this is by no means an impossible deficit for Wilder’s team to overcome, a poor start might be costly.

The Blades are unlikely to be in the running for relegation, but they must find a solution to their off-field problems quickly or else they may have to endure another challenging Championship campaign.

Over the next several weeks, a lot of predictions similar to McCoist’s will probably be made about United. If Wilder and his team want to contend for promotion the next season, they will need to disprove the naysayers.
