Huddersfield Town winger Connor Mahoney admits he is “excited to get started” with his new club upon completing his move to Barrow.
The 27-year-old has joined the League Two outfit on a two-year deal following his release from the Terriers. Mahoney has made the switch to a side that finished eighth in their division last term, with the Bluebirds ending the season just a point outside the play-off places.
The Cumbrian outfit have since parted company with manager Pete Wild, and have appointed former Tottenham Hotspur, Birmingham City and Leicester City midfielder Stephen Clemence as their new head coach.
Mahoney was on loan at Gillingham last season under Clemence’s direction, and the winger is happy to get the chance to work with his old manager again.
After moving last week, Mahoney expressed his happiness to the club’s website, saying, “I’m delighted.” After getting things worked out this morning, I’m now eager to see what the future brings.
I believe it has been in the works for a few weeks. Given our bond from our time together at Gillingham last season, it goes without saying that we have stayed in touch.
We’ve just been in communication over the past few weeks, and now that we’ve finally finalized a contract, I’m thrilled to be back here and to be working with him.
“I am aware of his expectations from both myself and the squad, as well as what to anticipate from him personally and as a manager. I’m thrilled to be here and play for him once more since it was a major motivator for me.
“I had a few more alternatives, but the coach and I had an honest conversation about what the club and I wanted out of this season, and our goals kind of lined up. It’s evident that I’m here now, happy to finish it, and eager to get going.
Mahoney joined the Terriers two years ago from Millwall, but in all competitions, the winger only made eleven first-team appearances for Town.
Having experienced a lack of game time at his previous two permanent clubs, the winger is eager to continue kicking on with his new team after featuring regularly for Gillingham last time around.
Discussing his aims for the upcoming season, Mahoney said: “Just to get back playing again as I did last season, and try and score as many goals and create as many goals as I can, and to get Barrow where they want to be.
“They just missed out on the playoffs last season, obviously, but I think we can reach our goals by the end of the season and hopefully have a successful one with a few more additions and maybe a different style of play from the manager.”
He went on, “I’m just an attacking winger who wants to get on the ball,” when asked what he will provide to his new team. I just create a lot of opportunities, occasionally drop deep and try to control the game, but I can also pose a threat to goals and I excel at set pieces. I’ll only serve as a helpful conduit for the group and an encouraging figurehead.
