A woman has been left seriously injured in hospital after a crash involving three cars and a lorry closed the A77 for more than seven hours last night.
The 30-year-old was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow following the incident between the Bankfield and Holmston roundabouts in Ayr.
The crash happened around 4.40pm and involved a green Citroen C4 Cactus, a grey Volkswagon Tiguan, a white Mercedes HGV and a white Ford Fiesta van.
The driver of the Citroen, a 30-year-old woman, was taken to hospital where her condition is described as serious but stable. The driver of the Tiguan, a 49-year-old woman, was taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock for treatment.
No one else was injured. The road was closed and re-opened around midnight.
Police Constable Stewart Carden said: “Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what happened and we are asking anyone who can assist to get in touch.
“If you were in the area at the time and can help or have dash-cam footage that has captured useful information then please make contact with officers.”
