Claudio Caniggia’s son has called claims that he molested his mother a “great lie” and is not the real deal.
One of the couple’s three children, Painter Axel Caniggia, vehemently denied the accusations made against the former striker.
Caniggia, the former international player for Argentina who also played for Dundee and Roma, has been ordered to stand trial for the alleged “aggravated sexual abuse” of his former wife. He could spend up to 15 years in prison.

The 56-year-old, who competed for his nation in three World Cups with players like Diego Maradona, suffered a serious blow when his attorneys’ appeals to have the accusations dismissed were denied by the Criminal Division of Argentina’s Nations Appeals Court.
Axel, who lives in Buenos Aires, shared an emotional Instagram post saying, “I would like to comment about the accusations of sexual abuse made against my father Claudio Paul Caniggia, which are a great lie. Alex is a well-known singer and actor, and Charlotte is a model and social media influencer.
“He never abused somebody or was violent in any way. To be clear, all of this is a massive fraud.
Despite the fact that his mother Mariana Nannis started the inquiry that resulted in Claudio’s prosecution by alleging he had raped her on May 6, 2018, at the upscale hotel, the 32-year-old artist made no mention of her by name.
The mother-of-three’s split with her husband of more than 30 years was confirmed in July 2019 – a year and a half after they began leading separate lives. She said Caniggia forced himself on her after she rejected his advances, hit her and threatened to kill her if she went to the police.
According to local sources, part of the evidence against him includes photos and statements from hotel workers that demonstrate Mariana’s injuries.
Since June, Caniggia has been prohibited from leaving Argentina; h
e has consistently denied any involvement.
Axel’s sister stated earlier this week that she wasn’t going to choose sides and added, “It’s very sad what’s happening.” Her connection with both of her parents has been negatively impacted by the issue. It’s not an easy job for me.
On Argentinian TV, Charlotte acknowledged that she didn’t even know her father well and said, “I miss my mum and dad. I want to hug them, talk to them, and have coffee with them.” But I have to accept the reality of my life as it is.
“My parents could wish to spend more time and become closer to me in a few years. I am amenable to that.
After splitting from Mariana Nannis, Caniggia moved on to date model and influencer Sofia Bonelli; he hasn’t commented since learning that his trial is proceeding. Sofia is over thirty years younger than he is, at 29.
