According to the most recent reports, former Millwall manager Joe Edwards was given consideration for a head coaching job at a team in the top division of French football.
Under three different managers, the Lions’ 2023–24 campaign was quite turbulent as they fought relegation. Starting his fifth season as manager at The Den, Gary Rowett had been in charge from the beginning.
Rowett resigned from his position after four years in charge of the team after a run of just one victory in five games, despite the fact that his team finished just one point outside the play-offs the previous season. Despite this, his team was still only three points out of the top six spots.
The Millwall management chose to take a chance on a young coach about to experience his first taste of life under pressure. The 37-year-old Edwards was announced as Rowett’s replacement, and his time in the dugout began brilliantly as the Lions defeated Sheffield Wednesday, a team also in danger of relegation, 4-0 at Hillsborough. This was the team’s biggest away win in six years.
However, after only three months in command, Edwards’ tenure came full circle when his team lost their final game in charge—a 2-0 loss against the Owls at home—before the board opted to end the project. After being relieved of his duties, the former Chelsea and Everton assistant manager for Frank Lampard eventually replaced by Neil Harris who managed to keep the club in the division.
Since then, Edwards has been unemployed; however, Ligue 1 team Strasbourg has expressed interest in Edwards as a possible replacement for former Crystal Palace and Arsenal manager Patrick Vieira, who departed earlier this week. This information is attributed to L’Equipe, via The Daily Record.
Edwards was discussed internally, the outlet added, because the French team was looking for an English manager who had experience developing young players. But the team determined that Liam Rosenior, the former head coach of Hull City, was the right person, and he will be revealed in the coming days.
