Sheffield Wednesday wins battle for transfer target in three horse race

According to the Heart and Hand Patreon, Plymouth Argyle has entered the race to sign Rangers winger Scott Wright.
Following their near-certainty of Championship status for another season, Plymouth Argyle are preparing for a new chapter under Wayne Rooney’s leadership.

Under Ian Foster, the Pilgrims faltered after off to a strong start under Steven Schumacher. In the end, Rooney emerged as the most impressive contender for the permanent position following the campaign, with Neil Dewsnip leading the Pilgrims to safety in his role as caretaker manager.

He’s been working hard to reorganise Home Park’s roster this summer, but more players are still needed.

A new name has recently come to Plymouth Argyle’s attention.

Reporter David Edgar stated on the Heart and Hand Patreon (via Ibrox News) that the Championship team is the most recent team to express interest in Rangers winger Scott Wright. The 26-year-old has been strongly linked to leaving the team, and the second division may be his final destination.

Wright’s recruitment has been considered by Sheffield Wednesday, but other teams are also interested. According to Darren Witcoop, Preston North End and Derby County, two more Championship teams, are also pursuing Wright.

Championship bound?

Wright was born and raised in Scotland, where he first attended Aberdeen’s academy before joining Rangers during the winter transfer window of 2021.

However, given the Championship’s growing interest, it’s possible that he moves south of the border. He could also think about Plymouth Argyle, as Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday are also rumoured to be interested.

It appears likely that he will move on as well. Given that he is nearing the end of his Rangers contract and hasn’t made much of an impact at Ibrox, this is a good opportunity for them to secure a fee for Wright.

If not, teams might try to sign him in 2025 as a free agent or on a pre-contract.

Rooney’s wing options

A few more wing options would be nice to add for Rooney and Plymouth Argyle before the new season begins. While Bali Mumba has previously operated there, Ibrahim Cissoko has joined Mustapha Bundu and star player Morgan Whittaker out wide.

Wright is a versatile attacking midfielder who can play through the middle and on either flank.

With his speed and versatility, he could be a threat to the Pilgrims offensive line at any level. Wright has a chance to make an impact at Home Park if Rooney can help him produce a little bit more in his game.

Though many teams are interested, it will take time to find out where the Scot will be working when the new season begins.
