Police have issued an update after a man was shot in the head and died. The victim, who is in his 40s, was shot on Boxwood Gardens, St Helens, at around 10.30pm yesterday, July 24.

Emergency services attended the scene and the victim was taken to hospital, where he was described as being in a serious but stable condition. Detectives said they believe the man was targeted by three other men.

A 32-year-old St Helens man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. In an update today, Thursday, July 25, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed the man has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Detective Inspector John Mullen from Merseyside Police’s Firearms Investigation Team (FIT) previously said: “A man is in custody in connection with this incident but I’d like to emphasise that our investigation is very much ongoing. We want to hear from anyone who has yet to come forward, whether you witnessed the incident or captured anything through CCTV, dashcam and doorbell devices.

“We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw two men on foot acting suspiciously in the area of Herbert Street and Cecil Street following the shooting, which would have been shortly after 10.30pm. If you live in these streets, please check any devices. Small details can make a big difference, so let us make the assessment as to whether what evidence you hold is significant.

We are committed to finding the person(s) responsible, thus we will keep conducting extensive inquiries. When we band together, we can and will take down the organized crime groups that terrorize our neighborhoods.
