‘Deal done’ – Leyton Orient land ‘fantastic’ Championship coup as Bolton make tough transfer admission

It’s now just over two weeks until EFL action returns for the 2024/25 campaign with an action-packed weekend set to kick off the Championship, League One and League Two seasons in early August.

Leyton Orient put in a strong season last time out, consolidating a place in the third tier, and will be looking to build this term.

Leyton Orient have confirmed the signing of Middlesbrough goalkeeper Zach Hemming on a season-long loan deal from the Championship outfit.

The 24-year-old spent last season at St Mirren, playing 46 times as the club achieved a fifth-place finish in the Scottish Premiership. That achievement was the club’s highest finish since 1985 and helped secure European football.

Born in Bishop Auckland, the shot-stopper is a product of the Boro youth academy but is yet to make a first team appearance for the club.

Leyton Orient Director of Football Martin Ling said: “Zach is still relatively young in goalkeeping terms but he has built up a lot of experience already. He is what you would call a modern-day goalkeeper who can play with his feet as well as keep the ball out of the net.

“Although we had to be patient with this deal, it is fantastic that we have been able to get him now so that he can join the squad in Spain. We’re very pleased to have him with us.”

Bolton Wanderers make transfer admission

Leyton Orient open their League One campaign with a trip to Bolton Wanderers, with the hosts aiming for promotion this season having made it to the play-off final last year.

It’s a tricky first fixture for Wellens’ side but Bolton fear that they won’t have some of their key pieces of transfer business completed by August 10. Wanderers have excelled in making the most of loan deals from Premier League clubs in recent years – such as Paris Maghoma and James Trafford.

The League One outfit hope to pull that off again, but any deals may not be in place for the season opener. Speaking to The Bolton News, Ian Evatt said: “We have looked around but the Euros haven’t helped us.

“What you’ll find is that the big clubs have big tours around the world to go away and play games in, and players who have been away at the Euros have a holiday and take some time off, so the clubs take the best younger players away with them, filling the teams and squads for the pre-season games. There’s a knock-on effect there. The better loans won’t become available until the Premier League is back in action in the middle of August.”
