A woman has died in a road accident in King’s Lynn.The accident, involving a lorry, happened in Norfolk Street, this morning .
A woman is believed to have died from serious head injuries after being hit by a refuse truck during the afternoon rush hour in King’s Lynn today .
The accident happened close to the junction of Norfolk Street and Railway Road at 4.15am.
Railway Road was closed after police officers, firefighters and paramedics raced to the scene and a diversion was put in place.
Sgt Pete Howlett, leading officer at the scene, said: “A road traffic collision occurred between a pedestrian and a refuse truck at 4.15am.
“The pedestrian, a woman, received fatal injuries. Our inquiries are on-going to establish what happened here.
“There were a lot of people here at the scene at the time of the collision and we would ask anyone who has any information to come forward.”
An Ambulance spokesperson confirmed the victim was female but said her age was not known.
She added an ambulance crew took her body to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn.
Rush hour traffic came to a standstill in the town centre after the accident and some traffic was diverted down Millfleet, along Boal Street and up to the Tuesday Market Place.
Traders along Norfolk Street said the woman was hit on the head by the refuse lorry.
King’s Lynn resident Fiona Jameson was unable to get home after the fatal crash.
She said: ‘I came out of a shop with a shopping trolley and there was nothing here, no traffic, nothing. I was by the bus station and needed to get a taxi home but I couldn’t because of the road closure.’
