The Ibrox club had been working on a proposed loan deal for the vastly experienced midfielder – but talks have stalled
Rangers have pulled the plug on a proposed loan move for Sevilla midfielder Joan Jordan – with the Ibrox club moving on to other transfer alternatives.
Boss Philippe Clement and recruitment chief Nils Koppen have been hunting the experienced 30-year-old playmaker in recent weeks after it emerged he was a top target to bolster the Gers options in the middle of the park. It’s understood the Glasgow giants had an initial offer knocked back by the La Liga team amid concerns of the wage structure.
Subsequently, though, reports in Spain asserted that the Gers and Sevilla had struck a deal that would see the Gers pay Jordan at least 60% of his wage during his season-long loan in Govan. The arrangement is also said to have contained a £3.4 million option to buy Jordan for a whopping €5 million. It was reported, meanwhile, that the out-of-favor former player for Espanyol Real Valladolid and Eibar was hesitant to continue his career in Scotland after learning he was no longer in manager Garcia Pimienta’s plans.
The Rangers Review now claims that the team has chosen to terminate negotiations due to a stalemate in the talks. They will now focus on other midfield targets, with former youth star John Fleck returning to his former club to train. It follows Clement’s candid admission that he wasn’t sure if he would bring in any more players before this Saturday’s Premiership opener at Tynecastle against Hearts. The Czech Republic international Vaclav Cerny was the most recent player to report for duty on a season-long loan switch last week, joining Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron, Liam Kelly, and Hamza Igamane as the other five new arrivals for the Gers this summer.
Jordan’s contract with Sevilla still has two years left on it, and he had expressed a desire to break back into the starting lineup. However, sporting director Victor Orta gave him a clear indication of his future at the team when he said, “They have been told that they are not part of the project.” Though we honour their contracts, it would be preferable if they went in a different direction. We believed that Jordan’s cycle had concluded when the club told his representatives of its plan. He’s seen it rather clearly. The club held a meeting with his representative, and it was made plain to him.
There had also been growing concerns that La Liga officials and the Spanish Footballers’ Association could step in over Jordan’s situation after he was omitted from a recent pre-season friendly against Orlando Pirates. It was suggested the decision to leave him out of the match was “one more step in the plan drawn up by the Seville club so that the player leaves before the end of the summer transfer window.”
