Police halt mass movement in Manchester as chaos erupts

As hundreds of demonstrators take to the streets of Manchester’s city centre, police have issued a dispersal order.

This action coincides with several nonviolent protests that the city has scheduled for today. Approximately one hundred fifty people have assembled in Piccadilly Gardens this morning for the ‘Stand Up For Your Country: Enough is Enough’ demonstration.

There is also a counterprotest called “Stop The Far Right,” which is expected to draw 350 participants. One man has already been taken into custody by police, indicating that there has been some tension between the two groups.

The Greater Manchester Police have implemented a disorder order that will remain in effect throughout the entire centre until 7 p.m. this evening. It provides law enforcement with greater authority to deal with individuals engaging in or instigating antisocial behaviour.

“These powers have been authorised to ensure that we can continue to provide and facilitate the right to any peaceful protests that have been organised,” stated Natasha Evans, Chief Inspector of the Greater Manchester Police.

“Anyone who is causing, or very likely to cause, harassment, alarm, or distress will be able to be instructed by our officers to leave the area right away.

“While it is legal for people to engage in nonviolent protest, we will take action against those who deliberately break the law.”

“If there are any updates regarding Section 34, please monitor our social media channels. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask officers on the scene. You can report any incidents using our website, 101, or, in an emergency, 999.”
