Josh Sargent, a summer transfer target for Leeds United, has agreed to a new long-term, five-year contract with Norwich City that will keep him at Carrow Road through 2028.
Football Insider said that former Norwich manager Daniel Farke was eager to reunite with the United States international at Elland Road two weeks before the summer transfer market closed.
After Werder Bremen was promoted back to the Premier League in 2021, Farke signed Sargent to the Canaries, but the attacker had a difficult first season in English football, scoring just twice in the top division.
But during the last eighteen months, the 23-year-old has improved, and since the start of the previous season, he has scored 17 goals for Norwich City across all competitions, including three from four games this season.
Sargent has sadly missed the last few weeks of play due to a serious injury he sustained away at Huddersfield Town, but Norwich nonetheless decided to offer the attacker a new contract.
Speaking with club media after his contract extension was signed, Sargent stated:
“I’m thrilled to have signed the new contract and am looking forward to staying here a little while longer.
Since I first arrived, I’ve like this club; they’re doing excellent work. Going forward, I view myself as an integral member of the team.
“The most important thing is to get promoted with this club,” he said.
Writer’s Opinion
For fans of Norwich City, this is wonderful news. Before getting hurt, Sargent had a fantastic start to the 2023–24 season and, once healthy, he will be a key member of the Canaries.
It seems sense for Leeds to lock down the former Werder Bremen player’s future at Carrow Road, especially as the club was reportedly interested in signing him during the summer transfer window.
