Major Oldham road closed as young man dies in tragic Greenacres Road smash

A devastating crash last night (Sunday) on Greenacres Road in Oldham took the life of a man in his 20s.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that at around 11.41pm, they were called to reports of a crash on Greenacres Road – close to Rydal Walk – between three cars.

Officers believe a car was travelling and crashed into two stationary cars, causing it to overturn.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, a man in his 20s was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two men, also in their 20s, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They have been questioned.

Detective Constable Alex Giblin, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident where a young man has lost his life, and our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones.

“They will be supported by specially trained officers at this distressing time.

“We are working tirelessly to get answers for them, but I urge anyone who has any information, or who may have witnessed the incident to please come forward and help with our enquiries.

“This could be an eyewitness account from the scene, doorbell footage, CCTV or dashcam footage.

“It can all be used to help us establish how a young man lost his life in such distressing circumstances.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Just after 12am this morning, two fire engines from Oldham Central and Ashton fire station, along with the Enhanced Rescue Unit, attended an incident on Rydal Walk, Oldham.

“Firefighters were in attendance for around an hour and 30 minutes.”
