A pedestrian in Oldham who was struck by a heavy-duty vehicle is still hospitalised due to severe injuries. On Wednesday afternoon, August 21, in the afternoon, the lorry struck the 86-year-old man on Manchester Road.
He was taken from the scene of the major collision to a hospital, which is thought to be Salford Royal. Just after 12:30 p.m., police blocked off the heavily travelled main road while paramedics responded to the scene.
A sizable heavy goods truck carrying what looked to be wooden beams was stopped in the middle of the carriageway while the Serious Collision Investigation Unit officers and police arrived.
Throughout the afternoon, the northbound carriageway was blocked off while the collision was being investigated. Moments before an air ambulance landed close by, residents claimed to have heard “screeching.”
The HGV driver stayed on the scene and is helping the investigating officers. There have been no takedowns.
Since then, a neighbour on Manchester Road has related how the air ambulance passed over their home shortly after they heard “screeching.”
“At around 12:30 p.m., I was preparing lunch in the kitchen with the window open. I heard squealing and what sounded like a large car applying severe brakes,” she remarked.
“I noticed an HGV with an open back full of beams when I peered out the window. About 1:00 pm, the air ambulance passed over our house and entered the park. I hope the man gets well because I was unaware that someone had been run over until hours later.”
“We are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage, following a serious collision on Manchester Road, Oldham at 12.36pm today (Wednesday, August 21, 2024),” a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson stated.
“A truck and pedestrian are said to have collided. The 86-year-old pedestrian was taken to the hospital and is still there due to severe injuries.”
