With ‘full focus’ on Saturday’s trip to Huddersfield Town, Sam Hoskins maintains that the Cobblers team has already moved past the disappointment of Saturday’s 2-1 home loss to Wycombe Wanderers.
Town suffered their first league home loss of the year as the Chairboys, who had previously won the Carabao Cup at Sixfields in August, overcame an early deficit to win three points.
Sam Hoskins’ seventh-minute penalty gave the Cobblers a quick lead.
However, just seven minutes into the second half, Town’s hopes of winning were dashed when a mistake by Jon Guthrie and Lee Burge allowed Richard Kone to tap in the game’s winning goal. The visitors had quickly equalised.
Although wingers Tarique Fosu and Liam McCarron brought much-needed pace and flair to the attack, the Cobblers did not manage to find a way past Franco Ravizzoli in the Wycombe goal.
“Obviously, losing a game is never nice, especially when you’re ahead 1-0 early on,” acknowledged Hoskins, who scored his first goal of the year.
“We followed a plan, and while some things went according to plan, others didn’t.
“This week, we reviewed it again and made an effort to identify the issues, but it becomes more challenging when a mistake results in the winning goal.
“At the end, we were exhaling a lot, but we were just unable to secure the equaliser.
“It’s disappointing but we’ve analysed it and now it’s full focus on this weekend and hopefully we can rectify those mistakes.”
Although the Cobblers had not won a game since the beginning of the season, which made the loss even more painful, Hoskins is adamant that he and his teammates have already demonstrated their ability to compete in Sky Bet League One.
The attacker added, “There have been games where we have returned in as well.”
“On the other hand, we gave up a lead at the weekend and then battled back for a fantastic point at Barnsley.
“It’s early days but we’ve shown already this season that we have a lot of talent and a great squad and hopefully we can build on the positives and push on.”
Huddersfield is in fourth place after a strong start, while the Cobblers are in 18th place in the league one standings heading into their matchup at John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday.
