Two Hurricanes players on the big move

On3 2024 Midseason True Freshman All-American Team members were announced on Monday. Tight end Elija Lofton and cornerback O.J. Frederique were among them. Lofton and Frederique have participated in all six games, with one start each. Miami has gained much-needed depth with Frederique, and the Hurricanes have versatility with Lofton.

According to On3, Frederique has played the second-most snaps this season among freshmen cornerbacks in the Power Conference. This season, Frederique has given up 61 yards and zero touchdowns on nine targets, according to Pro Football Focus via On3. This season, Frederique has racked up 11 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 pass defence.

Right away, Frederique has surpassed his recruiting ranking. Frederique was ranked as the 779th prospect, 67th CB, and 108th player in Florida for the 2024 class according to 247Sports recruiting profile. According to David Lake of Inside the U, Pro Football Focus ranks Frederique as the 19th best Miami player for 2024.

With seven receptions, Lofton is sixth on Miami with 133, and he has one touchdown. Lofton has received four passes that have resulted in first downs. Lofton has two catches of 25 yards or more and four of 15 yards or more. Lofton has developed into a vital blocker for Miami, and after working out there in the spring, he might be given goal-line carries.

With the exception of Virginia Tech, Lofton has a reception in every game this season. Lofton became an instant member of Miami’s offence. As part of a deep Miami TE rotation, Lofton had two receptions in each of the first three games of 2024 against Florida, Florida A&M, and Ball State.

Lofton and Frederique have a bright future ahead of them. In 2025, Frederique hopes to be a full-time starter for the Miami Dolphins. He is currently a member of the CB rotation. For Miami in 2025, Lofton and Riley Williams are expected to see the majority of the snaps and targets at tight end due to the possibility that starting TE Elijah Arroyo will enter the NFL after the 2024 campaign.
