John Cartwright has stated that there is ‘a little room’ for Hull FC to bring in a further signing should the right player present themselves. Hull Live has previously reported that the Black and Whites are after a middle to complete their 2025 roster, with the club’s new head coach suggesting that there is the salary cap room to do so.
Declaring that there is ‘scope’ to bring someone in, Hull are looking for what would be a tenth new recruit for the 2025 season. They have signed overseas quartet John Asiata, Jordan Rapana, Aidan Sezer, and Cade Cust, with domestic additions coming in the shape of Jordan Abdull, Amir Bourouh, Oliver Holmes, and Ed Chamberlain, who makes his loan move permanent.
But it’s another middle Hull have their eye on, with Cartwright, as per Adam Pearson, having a big say in recruitment alongside Richie Myler since his appointment was confirmed. That has seen the key figures work together to come up with the best outcomes, something Cartwright has labelled as an everchanging process.
“It’s been endless, but that’s the game these days,” Cartwright, who arrived in the U.K. last weekend, said. “Your squad is constantly changing, and sometimes that’s not on a weekly basis; it’s on a daily basis.
“It is a different game now; we all love loyalty, and I love that part of the game, but the reality is it’s not there now as it was when I was growing up. It’s constantly changing; player managers are becoming involved, and they’re always looking for the best deals for their players, and players are always looking to play first grade. It’s just ever evolving, but we’ve got a settled squad now.
“We know what we have, and there’s a bit of room there to add if the right player comes along. We’ve been pretty cautious as not to jump in and sign players. We’ve been as patient as we can be. That has left us with a little bit of scope to improve our roster situation.”
Confirming that any further addition will be domestic, Cartwright believes there is talent to go at, with Hull’s new head coach impressed by what he saw in England’s Test victory over Samoa last Sunday. Hull’s challenge? To find the next up-and-coming talents.
He added: “Our import situation is full, but the British game, I think, is thriving at the moment. I watched the Test match at the weekend, and they (England) are competing with the very best in the world at the moment. They’re producing players, and we’re on the lookout for the next one.”
