A 26-year-old man was imprisoned for assaulting store employees in Northampton and stabbing a police officer with a vegetable peeler.
After entering a guilty plea to charges of causing grievous bodily harm without intent, threatening someone in public with a blade or sharp object, assault by beating an emergency worker, assault by beating, common assault, possession of a Class B drug, and criminal damage, Parampreet Singh appeared at Northampton Crown Court on September 25 for sentencing.
On March 30 of this year, Singh was seen charging his phone in a store in St. James’ Retail Park using a power outlet. He became violent and verbally abusive after being ordered to stop by one employee, and then he attacked another employee.
When police came, Singh quietly avoided answering their enquiries for a few minutes before attacking with a pointed vegetable peeler, according to Northamptonshire Police.
One officer suffered a stab wound to the top of his head, and another sustained deep scratch marks to his arm during the attack, which only ended when Singh was tasered.
On his way to jail, Singh also spat inside a police van several times, resulting in the discovery of an amphetamine packet during a search.
Detective Constable Roisin Harrison, CID West’s investigating officer, stated after the fact: “I’m really pleased that Parampreet Singh has been jailed for his awful behaviour that morning.”
His attacks on store employees and subsequently police officers were completely unwarranted, and the brutality he employed was startling—it went from a peaceful setting to a furious assault in an instant.
Singh could have easily caused a very serious stab wound with a sharp object, and his impact on the officer extended far beyond the harm he caused.
“He was obviously under the influence of drugs on that particular day, and aside from pleading guilty, he has not expressed regret for his actions.”
Singh, of Birmingham’s Heath Street, was given a 19-month prison term and mandated to pay a victim fee of £187.
Additionally, the court suggested that the Indian national be deported after completing his term.
