Jim Curtin, the head coach of the Philadelphia Union, was fired on Thursday.
After Sporting Kansas City’s Peter Vermes, Curtin had the second-longest tenure of any coach in Major League Soccer. Philadelphia have been coached by the two-time Sigi Schmid MLS Coach of the Year since 2014.
The Union advanced to the 2022 MLS Cup final and won the 2020 Supporters’ Shield while Curtin was in charge. They also advanced to the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup thrice and were finalists in the US Open Cup three times.
For the first time since 2017, Philadelphia missed the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in 2024 after finishing 12th in the Eastern Conference standings. Curtin had a 170W-90L-134D record in 11 seasons in every competition.
Alright, so why are we discussing a man who recently lost his position as head coach?
Simply said, FC Dallas has not yet announced who would take over as head coach for the 2025 campaign, so they are still without a full-time coach.
A few weeks ago, we were informed that the team had selected three finalists, with additional interviews scheduled in the coming weeks to select the next head coach. Peter Luccin, the temporary manager, is one of those contenders.
The identities of the other two finalists are yet unknown, however we do know from FC Dallas president Dan Hunt and technical director Andre Zanotta’s remarks that the other finalists possess a thorough understanding of how Major League Soccer functions.
I think the club should interview Curtin after Thursday, which would be a fast diversion from their coaching hunt. The time has come to take action with Curtin before St. Louis and Atlanta United, who are also looking for a coach, approach him.
I think Curtin would be a great match for FC Dallas for the following three reasons.
